What's your keyword?
No, that's not the latest bad pickup line. But really (pardon the pun) the key to being found online. In the old days people might go to a phone book and look for the right header, and find the listing underneath. Remember all the frustration when they used a completely different header than what you thought it should be? Today we can toss the phone book to the dogs (literally!) because almost everyone now goes to either a search engine or an online network (like our DWCLinkedIn Group or DWC Faces - both available to paid members) and types in keywords . But just like in the YellowPages, if you don't have the right keywords, your clients might not be able to find you! While some of your keywords will be obvious: first name, last name, occupation, company. Don't just leave it at that. If you're a lawyer, what if someone types in "attorney"? Best to put both, and perhaps your specialty. "Financial advisors" might want to make sure they put that as well as "financial services" as a keyword. Or, what if you do public speaking as a way to promote your business? You might want to put down "speaker," even if that's not your day job.
Keyword tip: Pretend you're a potential client who needs the type of service you offer, but doesn't know you or your company. What keywords would you type in? Then ask a few of your friends to do the same test and compare what keywords they used. You might be surprised at what you find (or don't find). |
