The 2010 Networking In and Out List
Elevator speeches out? Distribution lists out? Yes - when it comes to networking. In 2010, any "one-way" conversations that are part of your networking plan are not likely to yield great results. In the era of social media, it's all about the conversation and this is what inspired this year's 2010 Networking In and Out list:
|
What’s
In |
What’s
Out |
|
Info sharing |
Name dropping |
|
Meaningful mingling |
Elevator speeches |
|
Engaging your target market |
Broadcasting to a mass market |
|
Becoming a trust agent |
Relying on corporate messaging |
|
Linking up on Linkedin |
Business card exchanges |
|
Using social media with privacy settings |
Shunning social media because you’re a “private person” |
|
Twitter lists |
VIP lists |
|
Followers, fans & friends |
Distribution lists |
|
Being personable |
Being too personal or “all business” |
|
Social media as a means to build relationships |
Social media as the end to business relationships |
Yes, social media is here to stay. This doesn't mean face-to-face networking is dead. It just means that we need to incorporate online networking into our normal networking. The advantage of online networking? It's convenient and fun, which means we are all much more likely to do it.
This list was compiled by Diane K. Danielson, founder of the Downtown Women's Club. Click here to see last years In and Out list.

Great list!
I see future posts from this such as illustrating "meaningful mingling" and "info sharing".
Happy networking in 2010!
